What is RefWorks? -- and what can it do for me?

RefWorks is web-based software that helps you manage your research. You can

Logging in to RefWorks

On the Library's homepage, you will find RefWorks at the bottom of the list enclosed in the purple box at the top right of the page. If you are not on campus, you will be asked to login to our proxy server with your username and password.

The first time you use RefWorks, you will be asked to create an account. You will choose what type of user you are - faculty or student and Victoria College or University of Houston-Victoria. You will receive an email welcoming you to RefWorkds use. It is important to remember your username and password for RefWorks!

Adding references to RefWorks

To learn how to get your references into RefWorks directly from a database, try this tutorial.

To enter your references manually, try this tutorial.

And finally - to import references from a text file, try this tutorial.

Creating folders in RefWorks

To create folders in RefWorks, use the pull-down "Folders" in the navigation bar. Select Create New Folder. Give the folder a name, such as "fuel cells" and use this folder to store your research references on fuel cells.

When it comes time to create a bibliography for your research paper on fuel cells, you can go to this folder and select all or some of the references - it makes organization easy!

Show others your references

To share your references with others, click on Tools in the navigation bar. Choose Share References in the drop-down menu.

You will have the option of sharing all of your references or just one folder. When you click on just one folder, RefWorks will generate a URL for you to give to others who have access to RefWorks. Folder options may be checked, and the URL will be formatted to email to YOUR email.

Use Write-N-Cite to automatically create a bibliography for your research paper

Write-N-Cite is a utility available for either Windows or Mac users. It is available from the navigation bar under Tools.

Write-N-Cite allows you to access your RefWorks references and puts them in your research paper in the proper format as you type. It also creates a "List of Works Cited" for you.
